Acrylic Partial Dentures
A partial denture is a prosthetic used to enhance and restore your smile when you still have some healthy teeth, reducing the need for full dentures (link to full dentures). Partial dentures are made stable using one or more natural teeth remain in the upper or lower jaw, or a dental implant, and bone structure as support for the partial dentures.
This removable partial denture, also called dental bridges, has replacement teeth attached to a base. This can be connected by metal framework to hold the denture in place in the mouth.
Sometimes you can lose teeth due to an illness, trauma or accident. Full dentures are unnecessary; using partial dentures can help you feel your best again. They create a framework that helps regain your smile, fill gaps and help you with chewing and talking again. With new partial denture designs, plastic and metal materials, equipment and methods, partial dentures are more secure and comfortable than ever. Many designs have no visible clasps and are virtually undetectable, blending in with your other teeth, gums and tissue seamlessly
Our dental prosthetist will help you decide on your partial denture design, make them in our laboratory before fitting them in our surgery for maximum comfort.
Unlike dental implants, full or immediate dentures, you only remove a few teeth; the treatment may need to adjust existing teeth but leaves remaining healthy teeth, intact, in your mouth.
The latest partial dentures are not only highly resilient and sturdy; they do not damage your remaining natural teeth. In fact, they can prevent your natural teeth from moving into any space left by the loss of other teeth and support your remaining natural teeth from falling out.
A partial denture will help you feel better, look better and eat better!
There are tooth supported partial dentures and tissue supported partials. The number of healthy teeth, the position and stability of these teeth are just a few of factors our dental prosthetist will take into account when assessing what style or type of partial denture would be best for you. There are so many different types of dentures our dental prosthetist will find the best fitting denture for you.
Metal Partial Dentures
- Acrylic partial dentures can act as a temporary replacement for missing teeth. They can be made quickly and less expensive. They can also be relined and add to, but generally are used as a temporary denture before dental implants. This prosthetic denture is soft and slightly weaker, and not always a good long term solution, as they can break frequently. Acrylic partial dentures fail ultimately because to make them stronger, they are made thicker, which prevents the patient from tasting food.
- Metal / acrylic partial dentures or cast partial dentures are more resilient and permanent. These are often made from titanium or chrome-cobalt alloy because they are super strong, light and very thin. Metal partial dentures are one of the most common denture procedures at Denture Professionals because the results are good; they are removable, don’t fracture or break and allow you to fully taste food and drinks.
- Newer thermoplastic partial dentures are both flexible and look great. But these can often be expensive.
All partial dentures are designed to be removed each night to support a healthy mouth. Read more about our oral denture care guide here.
